FSU Nuts & Bolts: MTA rep, Canvas is coming, Paid Leave and Longevity Bonus

2/12/2024

Dear Members,

If you are reading this from your UMB office, then you are not one of the estimated sixteen million who call in sick the day after the super bowl.  There is even a legislative push to make this Monday a national holiday.  With so many with the super bowl flu, I hope for a lighter commute.

MTA Field Representative

Each MTA local is assigned a field representative to assist and support the local in such areas as bargaining, organizing, membership development and contracts.

NEW TIME: FSU LGBTQIA+ Caucus, Wednesday 2/14 at 3:30pm

2/8/2024

Union Colleagues of the FSU LGBTQIA+ Caucus,

We invite everyone to a Zoom meeting to discuss LGBTQIA+ issues as a caucus and report back to the FSU and the Core Bargaining Team. We believe a synchronous Zoom experience can help us better know each other and amplify our collective needs, as well as accommodate people’s schedules and transportation needs. We hope you aren’t Zoom fatigued just yet!

FSU Nuts & Bolts: Elections, Sick Leave Bank, Canvas and Upcoming Events

2/5/2024

Dear Members,

I hope your first two weeks of classes are going well.  For early morning arrivals, sunrise is finally before 7AM! Monday, February 5th is truck day.  This is the day an eighteen-wheeler is stuffed with Red Sox equipment and leaves Fenway Park heading south to spring training. When baseball begins spring cannot be far away.

FSU Spring 2024 Elections

POSTPONED - FSU LGBTQIA+ Caucus, Thursday 2/8 at 2:00

2/1/2024

The FSU LGBTQIA+ Caucus meeting on February 8 has been postponed so as to not conflict with a WGSS candidate talk that has been scheduled for the same time. We are consulting with that department and will send out an update as soon as this caucus meeting has been rescheduled.

The Point: UMB and the Corporatized University

2/1/2024

Towards the end of last semester we at The Point came across an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education that captures so much of what is happening within higher ed that we decided to simply reprint it.  Although UMass Boston has (up until now) avoided some of the corporate incursions into higher education and concomitant disinvestment by the government, much of what follows hits far too close to home.  It highlights many of the dangers to avoid while suggesting alternative models for building a better system of higher education.
