Marlene Kim, Economics Professor and President of the Faculty Staff Union. Remarks at the UMB Community forum, April 18, 2018.

We are here today to say that UMass Boston will not be treated as a second class citizen. 

The UMass System, the Board of Trustees, and Board of Higher Education needs to provide educational opportunities to all its citizens, including the underserved.  The Massachusetts legislature needs to provide funding and oversight that’s needed to ensure this.

UMB Community Meeting:  Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 18, at 12 noon in Campus Center Ballroom A,  we will be discussing the UMass Mt. Ida Acquisition, parking fee increases, budget cuts to Centers and Institutes, providing debt relief to UMB, how we can Stand up for UMass Boston at this key juncture.  See the FSU Facebook Event Page here.  Please attend!

April 4, 8:30—9:30 am, 1 Beacon Street (1 block from the Park Street T Station), Boston: Janelle Quarles, President of the Classified Staff Union, and Tom Kane, Director of the Joiner Center, will be addressing the Board of Trustees’ Administration and Finance Committee meeting on how the budget cuts have affected staff, students, and the university.

Bargaining update: We finally received a written salary offer of:

Salary:   We were offered 1% as of July 1, 2017, plus an additional 1% in merit if the state reaches its revenue target of $27 billion. 

  • Fiscal year 2019 (2018-19): To be determined. 
  • Fiscal year 2020 (2019-20): To be determined. 

The FSU is working with a coalition of unions across the UMass campuses for higher salary increases, no take-backs; an additional .5% in addition in lieu of steps; and any merit in addition to a real cost of living increase.
