UMass Budget - Good News and Action to Defend Higher Ed

10/15/2020

Dear FSU Members,

The good news is that Governor Baker is proposing to level-fund public higher education!  This is a product of the campaign that the MTA – ourselves – has carried out during the past months.

If Baker’s budget proposal passes, almost every campus gets the same as the Governor proposed back in January, which was essentially level over FY2020.  UMass gets a little cut from Baker’s original FY2021 budget, but it is still higher than FY2020. (MTA is looking into why UMass got a bit less than originally proposed).

Dear FSU Members,

As part of the FSU’s commitment to expanded bargaining (see the FSU policy here), we invite you – as members of the FSU bargaining team – to our next bargaining session on October 14th from 1pm to 3pm, where the Core Bargaining Team will respond to Admin proposals (around salaries, course caps, academic freedom, etc.) while presenting some new proposals of our own.

The Point: Surveillance States

10/5/2020

In which we consider the matter of why UMB’s administration would choose to propose new contract language on “academic freedom” and what questions this raises about cultures of surveillance.

The examination combines the techniques of an observing hierarchy and those of a normalizing judgement.

Greetings, Colleagues:

Bargaining Update: Salary, Course Caps, Academic Freedom

10/2/2020

Dear FSU Members,

On Wednesday, the FSU Core Bargaining Team, along with our 30 member Expanded Bargaining Team, received proposals from Administration (attached) that would eliminate raises for three years, curtail academic freedom, explicitly require unpaid work during the period of non-responsibility, and potentially increase course sizes significantly. Quite simply, the administration wants us to do more work for less pay and with diminished autonomy.

REMINDER: FSU Special Election – Nomination Period extended

10/1/2020

Dear Tenured FSU Member,

A final reminder that the deadline for submitting nominations for the vacant Tenured faculty member representative on the FSU Executive Committee has been extended to Monday, October 5th at 5PM EDT.

The vacancy is a result of a resignation and to make sure tenured faculty have the full complement of four representatives, a special election is being held to fill the seat. The term of office begins once election results are posted and ends May 2022.

Attached is the Nomination Form.
