FSU Nuts & Bolts: NTT Promotions

12/5/2022

Dear Member,

This issue of Nuts & Bolts is aimed at NTTs applying for promotion along with those serving on Department Personnel Committee (DPCs) and College Personnel Committee (CPCs).  We hope this information clarifies the process.

Timeline

If you are a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Senior Lecturer II (including clinical lecturers) and wish to apply for promotion, in addition to the eligibility requirement, there is a timeline that takes place in two academic years.   You need to state your intent in one academic year but do not apply until the next academic year.

To be able to submit promotion materials in January 2023, you needed to inform your Chair by May 14, 2022.  The deadline to submit your promotion materials is January 27, 2023.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer (SL) and Senior Lecturer II(SL2)

The process and materials for promotion to SL or SL2 has not changed.  Please read Article 21.12.

The attached slide show provides an overview of the process and a listing of required materials.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer III (SL3)

NOTE:  This information is only for those submitting materials in January 2023.

This new rank was added in our 2020-2023 collective bargaining agreement. During bargaining, we mirrored the promotion details after existing contract language of promotion to SL2.

Sometimes unintended consequences arise during implementation.  The number of SL2s indicating their intent to apply in January 2023 was much larger than expected.  We are excited so many are eligible and want to be promoted yet the substantial number of applications impacts reviewing authorities specifically College Personnel Committees. To not overly burden the CPCs, the FSU entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Provost office that amends the materials an applicant must submit and also the CPC output.

We believe this MOA achieves a necessary balance between reducing the overwhelmingly large increase in workload for NTT on promotion review committees resulting from the high number of promotional applications and ensuring that applicants to the Senior Lecturer 3 rank undergo a fair and thorough review.

What do I need to submit?   (see slides 11-13 of attached document)

Current curriculum vitae

Cover letter of not more than four (4) pages summarizing your teaching and service (and scholarship, if applicable) since your promotion to SL2.

What is the role of Department Personnel Committee (DPC)?

The DPC, in addition to receiving the above, shall review your AFRs from your last promotion.  Also subject to the departmental policies for the use of teaching evaluations, review a sample of the last 3 years of teaching evaluations to the DPC for their review.  The AFRs and evaluation are submitted to them by the Chair.

The DPC will write a concise recommendation letter based on the review of the submitted materials.

What is the role of the College Personnel Committee (CPC)?

The CPC will receive the DPC recommendation letter, the department chair letter, and the submitted materials for the applicant.  The CPC will write a concise recommendation.

We hope this information was helpful. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Sincerely,

Caroline Coscia
