The Point: Fanfare for the Common Good

9/14/2020

In which we argue against the easy fixes of “drive-by diversity” in favor of a profound mobilization across the communities of interest—students, faculty, staff, community members—that should run this university.

Greetings, Colleagues,

For those of us working in higher education everything is up for grabs, isn’t it?

I mean even figuring out how to start an email to a colleague is not a simple task: “hope this finds you well” seems problematic at best.

Dear FSU Members,

Happy Labor Day.   Attached is a zoom background for your use -- courtesy of the MTA...with some catchy slogans about the current campaign to fund higher ed, stop the layoffs/furloughs, and keep our campuses safe.  Enjoy!

Campus Construction Update

9/4/2020

Dear Faculty and Librarians,

Many of you have asked the status of campus construction specifically if the timeline has been accelerated with us not on campus and how this might impact those who are frequently on campus and those who might need to pick up materials from your office.

FSU Special Election for vacant Tenured position

9/2/2020

Dear Tenured FSU Member,

Welcome back!    September is the beginning of the new academic year and this year includes an election to fill the vacant seat for a Tenured faculty member on the FSU Executive Committee (the Ex Com is the governing body of the FSU and is comprised of elected representatives from the librarian, NTT, pre-tenured, and tenured constituents; for more, see here).

Exploitation of Associate Lecturers at UMB

8/31/2020

Dear FSU Members,

As you know, approximately 350 NTT faculty received non-appointment letters this past spring, meaning that they would not be offered classes to teach this fall.

While close to 80% have been hired back, one of them, Maria Mellone, has not.  Maria Mellone was an Associate Lecturer in the Math Department.  She was also a member of our Core Bargaining Team, the first Associate Lecturer appointed and confirmed by the Executive Committee of the FSU to this important committee.
