FSU Update on COVID-19 Impact Bargaining

4/6/2020

Dear FSU Members,

We write with an update about COVID-19 impact bargaining with the Administration. Along with the other campus unions, and based on your input, we developed the set of proposals we sent to you last week. The administration refused to negotiate with the campus unions together, and therefore the FSU Core Bargaining Team met separately with the administration on Tuesday, March 31st and Thursday, March 2nd.  We only discussed the FSU-specific proposals in the larger document (but will eventually discuss the larger, shared, proposals).

I hope you are staying safe and are well during these difficult times.  Here is an update on what is going on.

Dear Faculty and Librarians,

We hope you are safe and well.

How are you doing and what are your concerns, needs?

3/27/20

Dear Colleague,

We hope that you are safe and staying well.  Let us know about your experience in this coronavirus time and your particular needs for your teaching and research.  We will be meeting with the administration to discuss how this alternative learning is going and would like to relay your concerns, issues, needs and experiences to them.  In the meantime, be well and keep us informed of your needs, issues and concerns.

Dear Faculty and Librarians,

Hope you are all doing well during this tumultuous time.

Your childcare needs

3/23/20

Dear Colleague,

I hope you are coping the best you can in these challenging times.  The Greater Boston Labor Council is circulating a survey to help Mayor Walsh understand the childcare needs of Boston’s workers.  Please take time to complete this so they can address this important need.

UMB Unions Call For Pay For All Workers

3/20/20

Dear Colleagues,

We want to let you know that the FSU Executive Committee has signed the following letter sent to Chancellor Newman and President Meehan regarding  student employment.

From the FSU Executive Committee

Dear Interim Chancellor Newman and President Meehan,

It has come to our attention that an email was sent out by Tom Miller seeking estimates of cost savings, including possible savings from student employee pay.  This is both unconscionable and irresponsible.

Email Action - UMass Coalition request

3/19/2020

Dear Colleagues,

The FSU Executive Committee is committed to the physical health, mental health and financial security of all UMass Boston students, faculty, and staff, as well as that of the larger UMass community. We believe UMass can and should be a leader in ensuring these values as we work remotely.  Thus far, while UMass students, faculty and librarians have been allowed to work remotely in the interest of public health, many staff have not been offered the same freedom and assurance.  They need our support.

Corrected 3/18/20, 2:00PM

Dear Colleague,

Things are changing quickly, so we want to share with you additional information that we gathered from various sources and from a meeting some of the executive committee members had with the Administration yesterday.  We asked many of the questions members have been asking, so see the answer to your questions below.

Emergency petition for our sister unions

3/16/2020

Dear Colleague:

Our sisters and brothers in PSU, CSU, GEO and other unions on the UMass Boston campus need your immediate assistance. The University is still requiring “essential” employees to come to campus tomorrow and for the rest of the semester. The definition of essential has been left up to supervisors and in some areas it is being defined very broadly. Please circulate the following petition to FSU members so that they can demand that that Interim Chancellor Newman keep the community safe:
