Admin refuses to bargain in front of FSU members

5/22/2020

Dear FSU Members,

We write with three important bargaining updates and a request for your help.

First the good news:  Administration (finally!) signed the Spring 2020 agreement that we reached with them in April (please see attached).

Now the bad news:

Petition in Support of Laid-Off Faculty

5/21/2020

Dear Colleagues,

Please remember to sign the petition circulated earlier this week to protest the laying off of NTT instructors at UMB.

Getting Right To The Point

5/18/2020

Colleagues,

This week I am going to get right to The Point: please read and consider signing this document—a letter in support of laid-off instructors at UMB which will be sent to the campus upper administration.

Letter to NTT Faculty

5/18/2020

Dear Colleagues,

With the end of classes last week, we want to congratulate you all on the amazing work of this semester, even as we must bring important and disappointing news.  As many of you have no doubt already heard, several days ago the UMass Boston Administration took drastic action in the name of preparing for a worst-case scenario for the Fall.  Chief among them is an initiative to reduce our ranks, targeting all those NTT faculty not yet on continuing appointment.

FSU Members – Invitation to Bargaining!

5/15/2020

Dear FSU Members,

As part of the FSU’s commitment to expanded bargaining (see the FSU policy here), we invite you – as members of the FSU bargaining team – to the first main table bargaining session on May 20th from 11am-1pm, where we plan to discuss with the Administration the ground rules for bargaining as well as a series of substantive issues around any potential reopening of the campus (i.e. health/safety, teaching, etc.).

Contact Congress for federal money and an update on legislative efforts

5/13/2020

Dear Colleague:

We know that many of you are concerned about the non-reappointments of NTT associate lecturers and some lecturers, and budget cutbacks. We will be following up directly with members who have received such notices with more information.  In the meantime, here’s how you can help:

NEA Summary of HEROES Act

5/12/2020

From the NEA:

Initial Summary of the Heroes Act

On May 12, Democratic leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives unveiled the 1,815- page long Heroes Act to address the coronavirus pandemic. The $3-trillion package would provide additional education funding, state and local aid, a second round of stimulus checks, meals assistance, and Medicaid funding, and addresses multiple NEA requests.

Update on Budget Cuts and Information on NTT Fall 20 Appointments

5/13/2020

Dear Colleague,

Across the UMass System, because they are facing shortfalls in the 2019-20 budget (UMass Boston is not facing shut a shortfall), campuses are asking staff at Lowell, Amherst, Dartmouth, and UMass Medical to take furloughs (unpaid days of work; some have accepted these).  UMass Lowell laid off 60 out of 130 maintenance staff.  UMass Amherst and Lowell did not provide classes for fall 2020 to adjunct faculty whom they cannot re-hire.

All union meeting tomorrow, letter to Meehan

5/11/2020

Dear Colleague,

We hope you are doing well. Below is the information for tomorrow’s town hall and information  on a union coalition letter we signed and sent to President Meehan.

► All-Union Meeting on the Budget Cuts: Tomorrow, Tuesday 5/12, 12-1pm.  We will be discussing what is happening on other campuses, at UMB, and will plan and organize for anticipated budget cuts.   See the attached flier.
