FSU Nuts & Bolts: Upcoming events and Healey Higher Ed Budget

Dear Members,

Welcome to meteorological Spring (March 1st)!!

This issue of Nuts & Bolts is a potpourri of items.  Many of us have long ‘to do lists’ the next week from mid-term exams to grading assignments, so a little light reading for you.

Save the Date:  March 30th Healey Library Archives Open House

The FSU and the Healey Library Archives are teaming up to hold an open house on Thursday, March 30th 1:30 to 3:30 in the 4th floor Archives room.   Come by to learn about our extensive archives collection. Did you know we have Federal District Court Judge Arthur Garrity, Jr.’s papers on the 1974 Boston school desegregation case?  Did you know we have some books from the 1700s?  Did you know we have materials on FSU’s founding? Did you know we have materials on the local music scene?

The March 20th Nuts & Bolts will include more details.

Save the Date: FSU Annual Meeting

The FSU Annual Meeting is Tuesday, April 25th 3:30 to 5:00PM.

FSU bylaws require the annual meeting to take place between April 1st and the end of the semester. The purpose of the meeting is for members to approve the annual budget, determine dues and establish (or amend) policies.

Watch for more details.  An agenda and supporting documentation including the budget will be sent no less than two weeks prior to the meeting.

The FSU Annual Meeting is open to FSU members in good standing only.

Rescheduled Higher Ed for All Advocacy Day at the State House

The February 28th snowstorm resulted in the postponement of the Higher Ed for All Advocacy Day at the State House.  The new date is not yet known.  Please consider joining fellow faculty and staff from other UMass campuses, the state universities, and the community colleges.  Together we can push policymakers to fully fund public higher education.

When the new date is announced, please be sure to register to attend (need for a lunch count) and to also register to take a bus from UMB to the State House.

Governor Healey’s budget and education

The Healey Driscoll Administration has announced their FY24 budget proposal.  You can see an email from MTA President Max Page and Vice President Deb McCarthy highlighting some of the budget items here.

MTA Annual Meeting is April 28th and 29th, Springfield MA

The Annual Meeting of Delegates is April 28th and 29th in Springfield.    This year’s meeting will be hybrid.  If you are unable to attend in person, you may join virtually.  If you are attending virtually, you will be able to vote and speak on matters before the meeting.

What happens at the annual meeting

MTA members are the MTA. We vote to adopt an annual budget, resolutions, bylaw changes and vote.  This year voting includes district representatives.

How can I be an FSU delegate?

Each local is allotted a set number of delegates based on the local’s membership. We will know our exact number later this week but past years we have had 12 delegates.  If you would like to be a delegate, please contact the FSU as soon as possible.

Friday March 17th is Evacuation Day in Suffolk County (Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop)

Yes, we all know March 17th is really Saint Patrick’s Day but in Suffolk County it is Evacuation Day and thus a county holiday.   For more information on Evacuation Day see

The FSU wishes you a restful and relaxing Spring Break.
