Join UMB and MTA allies at the State House this Thursday from 3-5pm

6/17/2019

Dear Activist,

Put pressure on the legislature to pass the Cherish Act by showing up this Thursday for Red for Ed Thursdays:

When? This Thursday June 20th 3-5 pm

Where?  At the side entrance to the Statehouse on Bowdoin Street. If you come later, look for us inside the Statehouse by the offices of Senate President Spilka (room 332) and Speaker of the House DeLeo (room 356).

Who?  Public K-12 and Higher Ed educators, staff, students and anyone who believes that public education should be fully funded!

What should you wear?  Red for Ed!  If you have a red Fund Our Future T-Shirt, wear it, or your FSU T-shirt, buttons etc.  Or whatever you happen to have on is just fine!

What should you bring?  Creative signs (we will have extra on hand); Short statements or messages that can be displayed or relayed to the aides of Spilka or DeLeo and/or Gov. Baker

Why are we doing this?  This action is a continuation of a 5-day sit-in by UMass Amherst students in May to support the CHERISH Act and the Debt Free Future Act, as well as to support the PROMISE Act (see below).  We want to signal to Senate President Spilka, House Speaker DeLeo, and Governor Charlie Baker, the powerbrokers who, at the end of the day, can decide on the fate of our bills, that they can expect a growing presence and increasing pressure at the State House until they pass funding that meets our students' needs.  In the short term, we are pushing for these leaders to help the CHERISH and PROMISE Acts make it out of committee with a positive recommendation.

What else can you do?  Educate yourself about the Debt-Free Future Act, the CHERISH Act and the PROMISE Act and talk to your neighbors, friends and coworkers about them. Contact your State Rep and tell them to contact Rep Roy and Senator Gobi and urge a pass vote out of the Joint Committee for Higher Education Committee.  Help us organize future Red for Ed Thursdays at the Statehouse!

College student activists ended a five-day sit-in at the Massachusetts State House last week after they failed to secure a meeting with legislative leadership to talk about the rising cost of higher education in the state.
