UMB, Salesforce, CBP (Customs and Border Protection), Mickey Gallagher's Retirement, and Other Information

7/1/2019

Dear Colleague,

The FSU has been busy.  Here’s the latest news.

► Please consider signing this petition from FSU member Jeff Melnick, who is graduate program director of the American Studies program. It asks that Interim Chancellor Katherine Newman sever ties with Salesforce, a Customer Relationship Management platform we use at UMB.  Salesforce has a contract with the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).  In a conversation with representatives of the UMB faculty, Salesforce executives confirmed that the company’s platform is used to “drive efficiencies around how U.S. Border activities are managed” and to “onboard” new CBP staff.

►We need volunteers to negotiate a policy for intra-campus employment (a policy for FSU members who are also employed at another UMass campus). Let us know if you are interested in serving on this bargaining team (bargaining can begin in the fall if the summer is a problem for you) or are currently employed on more than one UMass campus and are willing to advise us and provide information regarding your experiences and concerns.  Contact the FSU office for more information.

► Mickey Gallagher, long-term MTA Consultant to the FSU and MSP, the latter our sister chapter at Amherst (and before that to a number of other locals) has recently retired. We wish to acknowledge and honor Mickey’s incredible service to the MTA and the FSU.

Mickey started at the MTA in 1987 was first assigned to the FSU and MSP in 2010, and has served as our consultant ever since. Her expertise in bargaining, grievances, and labor law have been an invaluable asset to the FSU over the years. She has served as chief negotiator, grievance officers’ advisor, informal advisor to numerous FSU committees, and much more. All of us in the FSU owe Mickey a debt of gratitude for the years of superb, expert service she has provided to us.

We are especially grateful for her achievements for NTT faculty, most notably her relentless pursuit and successful negotiation of continuing employment status, and her equally tenacious work that finally resulted in the opportunity for a group of long time NTTs to switch into the state retirement plan, an option that they had previously been denied.

We wish her all the best in her retirement!

Sincerely,

Marlene Kim
