FSU LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group's Five and a Slide

Dear FSU Colleagues,

The Queer Trans Trivia Bee was so fun that we want to keep the good times rolling!

We are hosting an on-campus 5 and a Slide event that you are all invited to attend and engage. This is part of a more deliberate effort to bring lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex scholars, and their co-conspirators together in caring community.

Here's how it works:

Before Wednesday, October 12, 2022 send Timothy ( a single PowerPoint slide that visually represents the scholarship you are doing (examples can be seen here and here). You only get one slide, so make it count and be as creative or not as you wish. What's the central image that guides your thinking? What are the five key words that shape your project? What's the title? What's the stupidest (in the best way) aspect of your research?

On Wednesday, October 19, 2022 from 5:00-6:30pm in ISC 03-3300, you will have up to five minutes to speak to your research, why it matters, why it is cool to you, or any other thing you’d like to share about it.

For those who need more discipline you might want to structure your five minutes around the following ideas:

  • Who are you and what do you want to be called by folks?
  • What's your object of study?
  • Why does this matter to you?
  • For whom does this research matter? Who are your people?
  • What's the thing about your work that excites you to keep going?
  • What are you still trying to figure out?

This isn’t a conference presentation. This is more relaxed. Think low-stakes or no stakes at all!

However, we are gonna bring a lovely but gruff looking timekeeper to enforce the rules! So be prepared to giggle when they lay down the law.

After the presentations, we'll have a chance to socialize around this research and, perhaps, offer readings and collaborations or not. It's our space and we'd get to shape it how we wish. Our goal is to simply relax and share what's happening in our research lives.

We want to stress that this is dirty and messy fun. We encourage everyone to be silly about their serious research agenda. The goal is to be relaxed about it knowing that we aren't judging you but coming together to learn from each other.

Importantly, you do not need to present to attend!
