Dear FSU Ex Com team:
I would like to move that FSU Ex Com vote to endorse the recent Faculty Council declaration of No Confidence in Marty Meehan & the UMass Board of Trustees (original text copied below), and that we further issue a version of this statement to all of our FSU members, adding our Ex Com endorsement tp this body statement from our brothers and sisters in the FC.
Yours in motion,
Joe Ramsey
P.S. I would be open to friendly amendments if anyone has a concise suggestion for something to be added or edited in this statement below. But it looks pretty ready to go to me.
UMass Boston Faculty Council has issued a DECLARATION OF NO CONFIDENCE IN PRESIDENT MARTIN T. MEEHAN AND THE UMASS BOARD OF TRUSTEES
WHEREAS the University of Massachusetts Boston campus is the Boston campus of the UMass system and fulfills its role proudly and with excellence; and
WHEREAS it is superfluous to build a branch of UMass Amherst in Boston, since there is already a Boston campus in the UMass system; and
WHEREAS the establishment of a satellite UMass Amherst campus in the Boston area would further complicate and weaken the already difficult process of equitable allocation and distribution of public funds
across the University system; and
WHEREAS the hastily proposed purchase of Mt. Ida College by UMass Amherst to establish a satellite UMass Amherst campus in greater Boston would set a clear a precedent and inaugurate an inter-campus model of competition, rather than collaboration, within and across the UMass system; and
WHEREAS the President and Board of Trustees have failed to communicate with the faculty, staff and students of the UMass Boston campus regarding such a detrimental plan and seek to prioritize the interest of one campus over the well-being of another campus; and
WHEREAS the imminent dangers of this proposed model of inter-campus competition have been publicly recognized by prominent public figures and experts in higher education, specifically in regards to the Boston campus;
WE, the Faculty Council of the University of Massachusetts Boston declare that we have NO CONFIDENCE in the leadership of President of the University of Massachusetts, Martin T. Meehan, or the Board of Trustees.
WE further urge that the proposed purchase of Mount Ida College by UMass Amherst with the intent to create a satellite campus in the Boston area be IMMEDIATELY HALTED.
