(NOTE: This is an Ex Com E-Vote)

FSU EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE E-VOTE 5/12/11

On May 12th, 2011 the FSU Ex Com was sent the following email and funding request. The Ex Com voted by email between May 12th and May 16th to approve the funding request (11 votes in approval, 0 votes against).

 Folks,

Heike is going to DC to this press conference (for $260 airfare).  She’s been very involved in these efforts, as you know.

I’m asking the excom to agree to pay for part of this, (and I’m asking if MSP will contribute as well).    What if we say $150, hoping MSP will pick up the rest?

Subject: request from the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education

Dear President Lynde,

I am writing on behalf of the officers of the California Faculty Association and the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education to ask if FSU would be able to send Heike Schotten to the official launch of the campaign at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on May 17.  (This event will be webcast for viewing by faculty, allies, students, and press around the country.)

Heike would be one of a small number of faculty speakers from around the country who will address issues around the crisis of higher education in this country as well as the campaign itself.

We have already begun working the press on this event, and I can say with confidence that Heike’s participation would give your local some good media coverage (in addition to helping the campaign, of course).  She would be identified as from your union in all materials and she would be one of the people on a list for reporters to talk with after the event.

Would FSU be able to do this?  UMass participation would really be valued—you’re seen as a very progressive and very activist union and exactly the kind of organization we need in this campaign to begin changing the direction of higher education in this country.

Also, I should add that I understand via Ferd Wulkan that some funding from MSP might be forthcoming if you made that request of them.

Thanks so much for considering this request.  Do let me know if I can answer any questions you might have.

In solidarity,

Susan Meisenhelder
