FSU Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

Executive Committee Members Present: Steve Striffler; Caroline Coscia; Tracy Brown; Monique Fuguet; Jessica Holden; Travis Johnston; Meghan Kallman; Linda Liu; José Martínez-Reyes; Jeff Melnick; Joe Ramsey; Tim Sieber

  1. Approval of the agenda: Motion to approve the agenda. Motion seconded. Motion passes unanimously.

     
  2. Approval of the minutes of the November 20 and December 4 Executive Committee meetings: Motion to approve. Motion seconded. Motion passes unanimously.

     
  3. Approval of the e-vote on Faculty Council Amendment: Motion to approve. Motion seconded. Motion passes unanimously.

     
  4. Approval of the e-vote on Spring 2021 Election: Motion to approve. Motion seconded. Motion passes unanimously.

     
  5. Election Spring 2021: Caroline resigns from the Elections Committee as she is up for re-election. Announcement sent from Elections Committee to FSU membership with information about the Spring 2021 election. Reminder emails will be sent between January 11-22. Nomination period runs from January 29 – February 12. Nominations Committee: Steve and Tracy volunteer; Joe might volunteer.

     
  6. Spring 2021 Executive Committee Meeting Schedule: Caroline will send Executive Committee members a chart with teaching schedules; spring meeting schedule will be determined afterward.

     
  7. Teaching Evaluations: Katalin Szelenyi gives overview. Committee constituted in the spring to look at teaching evaluations (chaired by Katalin Szelenyi and Jeff Melnick). In the fall, tasked to look at evaluations in the context of the pandemic. Committee found that evaluations have race, gender, sexual orientation, and instructor first language bias. Biases are worse during the pandemic. Discussion of the role and mode of course evaluations and FSU’s potential involvement.

     
  8. Faculty Work Visas: Tim gives overview. Racial justice and financial issues faced by international TT faculty.

     
  9. FSU Budget: Monique provides a breakdown of our current spending categories. Discussion of FSU’s budgetary goals and priorities and potential dues increase.

     
  10. Uncompensated Labor: Meghan gives overview. Discussion of uncompensated emotional labor, which falls disproportionately on women and people of color.

     
  11. Exit Interviews: An item on the Faculty of Color Report. Tim gives an overview. Discussion of how exit interviews can be implemented and who might conduct them.

     
  12. Grievance: Motion to enter Executive Session. Motion seconded. Motion passes unanimously.
